First Month Back: A college sophomore month recap
The college semester has started for many, including for myself, as I enter my second year!
Classes
I have 5 classes this semester. Rather, 4 classes and a lab.
- Computer Science, Architectures and Structures: A fully online, asynchronous class. We are given ample time to complete our assignments, and so far it has been interesting.
- Engineering, Introduction to MATLAB: I am enjoying MATLAB so far, as it is a class heavy on programming; it is similar to R, a language I am familiar with and actively enjoy. Most of all, I am enjoying seeing the real-world applications of the mathematics problems we are given, specifically via real-world type of examples given by the professor.
- Physics, Calculus Based: This is one of my more challenging classes, since I often struggle with setting up word problems as models; however, if I am able to overcome this hurdle, the process of solving these problems are much simpler.
- Calculus 3: A lot of my associates tell me this is a fun class, with a lot of puzzle solving. So far, we have studied vectors and the 3d space, which I’ve been informed is “setting up for the fun stuff.” I look forward to what this class has in store for the rest of the semester.
Clubs
- Girls Who Code: The club I started last year is active once more! We have had our first two meetings, and we will have our third meeting this Thursday. The first meeting was a introduction to the officers and club, and the second was a project showcase. The third meeting is “how to prepare for a hackathon;” the reason we are hosting that meeting is because we are hosting a hackathon at the college. The Moorpark Codefest, a beginner friendly hackathon. Find more details here!
- Art and Mental Health Club: We had our first meeting of the semester. We introduced our officers, recapped our previous year, and had a doodling activity. While turn out was a little low, I look forward to seeing what new faces join us post-club rush. Our next meeting is going to be a Makerspace collaboration on October 1st. We will also be attending the Moorpark Health Fair to talk about art in relation to mental health benefits. Looking ward to this semester. :)
Other
Beyond school and clubs, I still work part-time. I am grateful for the opportunity to work in such an environment.
Conclusion
While the start of the semester has certainly been busy, I am so thankful to have these opportunities to learn and grow. Thank you for reading!!
