Girls Who Code Apollo Meetup

About a month ago, Girls Who Code hosted their meetup in LA with Apollo; a speed networking event that provides any 18+ member of the Girls Who Code community to network and learn! While the event was a month ago, I will recap the events to the best of my ability.

Round 1

The first round was discussion, a more general discussion exploring the workforce. Questions like “How can someone make their experience feel relevant, even if they are still early in their career?” arose.

Round 2

Round 2 explored tech roles in the day to day, the round title being “exploring tech roles beyond the obvious.” We were advised to look for jobs through university career fairs, which I made note of since that seems to be a theme.

Round 3

Round 3 was my favorite round by far, since we went over our LinkedIns and resumes: I was given extensive advice on how to improve my resume, such as :

• add more context, and less listing of activities, get more specific
• Soft/hard skills and tools should be listed As for my linkedin, I was told to focus on the first impressions of my page, since that is what counts heavily into if a person will be interested in my profile further. I recently updated my resume with these critiques in mind.

Round 4

Round 4 was about interviewing, and the major tips was:

• the interviewer will be asking “do I want to work with this person?”; keep in mind the personalities
• Ask questions about the problem given
• “tell me about yourself” include a hobby or personality
• Uniqueness of background provides value

Group Discussion

Group discussion was interesting! When asked how else to network, I answered that people should network through clubs, college programs, and in-person communities!

Final Thoughts

I thoroughly enjoyed this opportunity, and I wish I could write more! I unfortunately had to delay this post because I was in Panama and just got back this week. See you next week!
