Girls Who Code April Update

As the president of the Girls Who Code college loop of Moorpark College, I am happy to share that we’ve had a successful spring semester thus far. Check out the recap –>

First and Second Girls Who Code Loop Meeting image

First and Second Meeting

There’s a seperate blog post about the first two meetings you can read here, on my blog or via LinkedIn.

Third Meeting

Our third meeting we finally had our first proper workshop! We went through the basics of HTML and CSS (Web development). After going over the basic syntax, everyone was invited to present their creations. We had a little vote, and someone entirely new to code won, because they were passionate about learning and we liked what they made! The slides are available here.

Fourth Meeting

For the fourth meeting, Alexis Godina, my vice president, hosted a HTML/CSS/JS workshop, which involving making a timer. I enjoyed it! The meeting slides are here.

Fifth Meeting

The fifth meeting was hosted by Jamal Adam-Qattan. You can read more about his workshop on his LinkedIn post.

Sixth Meeting

The most recent meeting was our sixth meeting, the “Basics of R: Data Science Worskhop!”
We followed the CSUCI/UCSB Datathon tutorial, which I kept the links for on both my blog post for the CSUCI datathon and the github repo for the UCSB datathon.

We used posit.cloud, which I’m fairly familiar with due to my Introduction to Statistics: For Data Scientists Honors class. Many of our typical members were not able to attend, but I always send out our workshops on our discord and on our mailing list, so members can always participate after the fact.

Final Thoughts

Finals are coming up soon, so we will likely put a hold on work or presentation heavy meetings and do some lighter workshops. I know we will for sure have one this Monday, but after that, I’m going to take a vote amongst members on it. Thank you for reading. :)
